Bending is a stamping process that uses pressure to force a material to plastically deform to form a shape with a certain angle and curvature.
Bending is one of the most common sheet metal fabrication operations. Also known as press bending, flanging, die bending, folding and trimming, this method is used to deform materials into angular shapes.
This is done by applying force on the workpiece. This force must exceed the yield strength of the material to achieve plastic deformation. Only then can you get lasting results in curved form.
There are quite a few different bending methods available. Each method has its own advantages. The usual dilemma is between precision and simplicity, with the latter being used more. Simple methods are more flexible and, most importantly, require fewer different tools to get one result.
Bending methods include: V-bending, air bending, casting, U-bending, step bending, roll bending, and bending springback.
